Master Bath Style

Updated: Mar 26, 2021

I never realized painting a few walls and decluttering under my bathroom sink would help me regain my sanity. This is "our home edit" a master bathroom update and organization on a budget.

Do you remember those gaudy 90's light fixtures? My husband has transformed them in our house for less than $15 and an hours worth of work.

We moved into our current home four years ago, we had just finished the renovation of our small bungalow and decided to move into a larger home. The budget for updating our new ranch home was non existent. The master bedroom ensuite was painted in a banana peel yellow on all four walls and the ceiling. I am not quite sure how I lasted this long in that yellow box.

I never realized painting a few walls and decluttering under my bathroom sink would help me regain my sanity. This is our "home edit" a master bathroom update and organization on a budget.

Our home updating started with the kitchen, then the laundry room/mudroom, next came the boy's bedrooms and last but not least our room.

Budget makeover supplies:

  • 2 Gallons of Paint ( We used Sherwin Williams)

  • Roller handle, Rollers, Paint tray and liners

  • I piece of poplar wood pre cut

  • Wood Stain-oil base in ebony color

  • Edison Lightbulbs

  • Hole saw drill bit

  • Black spray paint

  • Ceiling light fixture

  • Wall Mirror

  • Shower curtain, hand towels, bath mat rug

  • Bins and trays

Our master bath is not a large room at all and we had been puzzled since day one about the full size ceiling fan installed in there. Most bathrooms just have the vanity and exhaust fan lights. My goal was to create a clean line modern look without breaking the bank.

One solid weekend of painting and a few trips to the hardware store, as well as, my favorite places to wander for hours: HomeGoods, Hobby Lobby and Tj Maxx- in search of the perfect mirror. Viola Hobby Lobby was the winner this time. Lucky to find it during their 50% off sale too!

After:

Before:

We replaced our outdated bamboo mirror with an elegant gold foil mirror.
Bye Bye Bamboo!

Wood, Stain, Hole Saw, Edison Bulb. WIN!
Poplar light fixture.

Ceiling fan replaced with this chic fixture.
Farmhouse Modern?

Gold and ebony hues.

Check out that before picture! Early 90's was a strange traditional period. We removed the ceiling fan and replaced it with this sharp sleek light fixture. The vanity light was removed and the glass mirror piece was placed on top of the poplar wood. The circles on the mirror were used as a tracing template. The holes were cut out of the poplar with a hole saw drill bit and the wood was lightly sanded and stained. The filler caps were spray painted black and a day later the light was reassembled; add some Edison bulbs and you have a new fixture without having to rethink the electrical work. The bamboo mirror was removed and the new mirror was hung in its place. (When hanging mirrors this heavy be sure to hit a stud!)

Now that the construction part of this makeover is complete its time for decorating and reorganizing. I emptied all of the contents from under the sink onto the bathroom floor. I hung the shower curtain and added the towels and rug.

First I removed expired and old products. Then I grouped all things alike together and wiped all surfaces clean.

Can you believe the day before this organization event I didn't think I had any hair ties. Well guess what I found 5 packages. The next day I went to Target- BY MYSELF- every moms dream. I found these awesome acrylic and plastic organizers and stackable bins. I think the most important part to this step is I had already weeded out all of the items I don't need and had a good idea in my mind of what was going where. This helped in the purchase and design of my new space.

These items are easy to misplace and tip over under the cabinets so I placed my every day hair care in this acrylic lazy susan I found at Target. I love its chic look and versatility.

Next up is under cabinet storage. I have organized the under cabinet storage for overstock as well as the items that are not used daily and of course these items don't look pretty sitting out.

Thats a wrap on our bathroom makeover/Home Edit inspired lifestyle changes. Stay tuned for more posts with tips and tricks for every room of the house.

I don't have any coupon codes for items at this time but I have linked them all up here so you can find them easily. Remember Target offers 5% off daily with the red card and Hobby Lobby has sales all of the time too.
